Monday Musings, June 6, 2022

Siblings in Christ,

Grace and peace to you this Monday morning. Yesterday, I had the great joy and privilege to worship with the soon to be federated church–Lyndhurst Community of Faith Church (Lyndhurst Community Presbyterian and Faith UCC). There was a spirit of excitement in the sanctuary. May God continue to bless this new group of disciples as they figure out their life together.

Heads up: Today’s Musings is primarily filled with pieces around Uvalde, gun control, and sexual abuse. In other words, what’s been in the news recently.

Here’s the list:

  1. Car Mechanic Turned Doctor
  2. Top Southern Baptists Stonewalled Sex Abuse Victims
  3. SBC Leader Warns that Trying to Prevent Abuse Will Destroy the Mission
  4. The Johnny Depp-Amber Heard Verdict is Chilling
  5. The Second Amendment Did Not Come Down from Sinai
  6. If You Love the Bible and God, Love Children. Live Children
  7. Where Do Religious Groups in the US Stand on Gun Control
  8. Ponderation
  9. Who Will Clean Out the Desks
  10. The Hard Won Triumphs of a Life on the Corner in West Baltimore
  11. After You Die
  12. Hold Back the Night

  1. Car Mechanic Turned Doctor: I’m starting with a “feel good” because quite honestly, I need it.
  2. Top Southern Baptists Stonewalled Sex Abuse Victims: Pages and pages and pages recount the 20+ years of silence by SBC’s Executive Committee. Here is a synopsis.
  3. SBC Leader Warns that Trying to Prevent Abuse Will Destroy the Mission: That sound you hear is my head hitting the desk. And he is serious.
  4. The Johnny Depp-Amber Heard Verdict is Chilling: The publicity around this trial is well known. People outside the courtroom taking sides. The outcome already has women pulling out of court cases. What has been communicated here is: you will be harassed, belittled, and ostracized for pressing charges.
  5. The Second Amendment Did Not Come Down from Sinai: The Sunday after the massacre in Uvalde, TX I attended church with Nick. He is a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace in Arlington, VA. This piece was on the back of the bulletin, written by the archbishop of the Diocese of Chicago. Powerful.
  6. If You Love the Bible and God, Love Children. Live Children: A Jewish perspective on the massacre in Uvalde, TX.
  7. Where Do Religious Groups in the US Stand on Gun Control: From an Australian news source–not all religious groups see the Second Amendment as a God given right.
  8. Ponderation: My friend Todd Jenkins wonders this.
  9. Who Will Clean Out the Desks: In honor of the teachers, a crowdsourced poem. Two contributors from NE Ohio.
  10. The Hard Won Triumphs of a Life on the Corner in West Baltimore: Susan Orlean remembers Denise Francine (Fran) Boyd Andrews.
  11. After You Die: Poetry speaks truth for me. This one is beautiful.
  12. Hold Back the Night: The Sunday after Uvalde, TX this is the song the choir at Our Lady Queen of Peace sang.
